The budoka known as Ozaru is a large and imposing man in the service of Yasuki Ashida. His tounge has been cut out and he has several prominent scars across his body, some of them bearing resemblance to the ritual scarring engaged in by certain groups of sohei. Ozaru’s past is unknown to all save him; Ashida met him along the road in southern Crab lands while he was being beaten to death by a samurai for daring to carry a weapon. Though he was larger than the samurai, Ozaru made no attempt to fight back, and Ashida took pity on him. She convinced the samurai that Ozaru was her servant and nursed him back to health. He has served her in truth since then. Ashida developed a crude sign language which she uses to communicate basic concepts with Ozaru. She has been impressed by his intelligence and demeanor, despite her outward show of disregard for the peasant. For his part, he serves Ashida humbly and without complaint.
